Hailsham, East Sussex – July 2025
East Sussex School of Circus Arts (ESSCA), based at Knockhatch Adventure Park, marked a historic milestone this summer as the first cohort of students graduated from its BTEC Level 3 in Circus and Performing Arts. The celebration—held in the school’s iconic Big Top—highlighted ESSCA’s unique role as the only sixth form college in Sussex dedicated exclusively to circus arts.

A New Era for Circus Arts Education

Founded in 2019 by Portuguese circus artist and actor Renato Pires, ESSCA offers an intensive, industry-recognised BTEC programme for students aged 16–24. The 36-week course combines physical training, creative devising, performance, and business skills, preparing students for diverse careers in circus, theatre, film, and live entertainment.
Graduates delivered a vibrant showcase of aerial silks, trapeze, hoop, equilibriums, and devised ensemble performances, demonstrating the breadth of their training and the school’s commitment to excellence and inclusivity. Neurodiverse and all-ability students performed side-by-side, reflecting ESSCA’s fully inclusive ethos.

National Recognition

ESSCA’s achievements and the success of its graduates have been recognised in the press, with features in both BBC News ,  ITV Meridian and The Argus. The coverage highlights the school’s pioneering approach, student journeys, and the growing demand for specialist circus arts education in the South East.
